The South African Nursery Association (SANA) is a commodity organisation affiliated to Agri SA. Through our provincial structures, Agri SA represents several ornamental and horticultural plant growers (farmers).
The cultivation of and trade in many horticultural and ornamental plant species have generally been understood to be regulated in terms of the provisions governing agriculture, which as a whole has been allowed to proceed without restriction during the Coivd-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown period.
Following the apparent prohibition by Department of Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries (DEAFF) on nurseries being open to the public (see Directions Regarding Measures to Address, Prevent and Combat the Spread of COVID-19 Relating to the Biodiversity Sector as published in Government Notice No. 537 of 14 May 2020) Agri SA approached the Director-General of DEAFF for clarity on the matter.
On 26 May 2020 DEAFF removed the prohibition on nurseries’ closure from the aforementioned directions for the biodiversity sector.
