Farmers need more support

Agri SA wants to express its condolences to the relatives of Gezina Bruwer, after a farm attack.

The farming community in the Molopo and North-West province is shocked by the brutal murder of Bruwer, early Friday morning, on their farm in the Molopo area. The suspects fled over the Botswana border after the murder. Agri SA wishes the loved ones all the best in this difficult time.

"The continuing brutal farm attacks on the agricultural community that make a productive contribution to the country's economy and provide food to millions of people, must be condemned," says Tommie Esterhuyse, chairman of Agri SA's Centre for Excellence: Rural Safety. "Farmers and farm workers feel isolated and live in fear daily."

Farmers suffer from the ever-widespread pressure of farm crime. Rural communities are soft targets for criminals and therefore a greater degree of preparedness is needed at home and involvement with local community security structures.

"Farmers urgently need the active support and action of their local police and the assurance that the criminal justice system is functioning effectively."

Agri SA appeals to any person with information to come forward so that the attackers can be arrested soon.
