Trade performance review of the agricultural sector of South Africa – 2020

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) has released the 2020 trade performance review, that sheds light on South Africa’s trade performance of agricultural products, relative to the prior year.

Some key take-aways:

  • SA’s agricultural product exports jumped by 18.1% while imports also grew by 6%, respectively in value terms.

  • Netherlands was the main export destination for SA agricultural products and Thailand was the main supplier of agricultural products to SA.

  • The leading product exported were edible fruits and nuts, meanwhile, cereals exports recorded the highest growth rate of 98.3% for the year, coinciding with SA’s second-largest maize production.

  • SA saw Animal or vegetable oils, fats and waxes imports being the highest growth rate, coming in at 28.3% for the year.

  • Imports from Germany declined while exports to Namibia and Botswana also declined.
